Before you take your pet to the vet, look into a Pets Best pet insurance plan. I purchased a plan for my cat 2 years ago for $47/month which covers wellness, illness, and injury. They have separate coverage plans for each. When I purchased the accident/illness plan was $25 and the wellness was $22. Flea treatments are not covered under Pets Best Insurance, and you will find that they aren’t covered under most other insurance companies as well.
Last year, I noticed a lump on the very tip of his tail (he’s 14 years old) and he began trying to chew it out so it was bleeding pretty bad. He had to have almost his entire tail amputated, and that isn’t cheap. Total costs for surgery, pain medication during surgery, sedation, pain med after surgery, cat collar, etc… was over $2500 and I only paid a fraction of that! Pets Best check in the mail for $1920 within about 2 weeks, fast enough time to pay back on my credit card before it even showed up on your statement.
Also, should my little baby boy pass away, my plan covers most of the costs for cremation, burial… the works. Â And if he has to be put to sleep because he’s dying and in pain….that’s covered too!
I highly recommend Pets Best pet health insurance. I researched so many different companies and this one didn’t discriminate against animals because of age. My cat was already a senior and they accepted him. Â :)

I became familiar with the concept of Pets Best pet health insurance while working at an Animal Emergency Clinic in the Puget Sound area of Washington. Members of our clinic staff met with a representative of one of the first pet health insurance agencies to offer comprehensive medical coverage for companion pets. It was an idea too long in the development stage. Witnessing the combined stress suffered by humans bringing in their traumatized pets; wanting the best care possible and wondering where the money will come from to pay for the life saving treatment is a nightmare.
Owners were often forced to make medical decisions for their pets based on the availability of funds instead of being able to come to a decision determined by what was best for their animal.
All too frequently, owners chose euthanasia rather than incur a substantial debt. The unexpected costs for emergency treatment and in many cases, the inevitable long-term care that follows, placed many families in the position of saying goodbye to a beloved pet. In too many cases, medicinal or surgical management may very well have been a viable option.

Unfortunately, I believed all the hype surrounding pet insurance. I bought, paid for and supported others getting pet insurance for several years, only to have an eye opening experience with the ASPCA pet insurance. My dog was rushed to the animal hospital, in the middle of the night, with a life-threatening illness on the day before our insurance was set to renew (I had never submitted a claim in the years prior to this). It took several days to save his life, so I sent in all the bills to the insurance company as one claim – a single incident. Their response was that while they would cover about 40% of what I had paid from 11:30 – 11:59 pm, at 12:01 my policy renewed and I was then ineligible to receive benefits because the illness was then considered a pre-existing condition! I was shocked! When I asked them to show me where it said that in the policy, a convoluted paragraph was read to me that said, each incident will be paid up to $1500, but they said that only counted during the year prior to the renewal! How many elderly have been victimized by this scam? I am sincerely disappointed with the ASPCA for allowing such practices!
I got your free report. It was great, thank you.

If you’re lucky enough to have more than one pet, you probably have a little bit of fear that it will be expensive to insure them all. Fortunately, some insurance companies will actually offer a discount for insuring more than one pet. This way you won’t have to choose which pets you think will need coverage more than others.
Take into consideration the age, breed and health condition of your pet. The older your pets are the more expensive they are to insure so do try to obtain insurance from a young age. In addition to that, the breed plays an important factor as well as some breeds is more prone to diseases than others, resulting in a higher premium.
