Take into consideration the age, breed and health condition of your pet. The older your pets are the more expensive they are to insure so do try to obtain insurance from a young age. In addition to that, the breed plays an important factor as well as some breeds is more prone to diseases than others, resulting in a higher premium.

Unfortunately, I believed all the hype surrounding pet insurance. I bought, paid for and supported others getting pet insurance for several years, only to have an eye opening experience with the ASPCA pet insurance. My dog was rushed to the animal hospital, in the middle of the night, with a life-threatening illness on the day before our insurance was set to renew (I had never submitted a claim in the years prior to this). It took several days to save his life, so I sent in all the bills to the insurance company as one claim – a single incident. Their response was that while they would cover about 40% of what I had paid from 11:30 – 11:59 pm, at 12:01 my policy renewed and I was then ineligible to receive benefits because the illness was then considered a pre-existing condition! I was shocked! When I asked them to show me where it said that in the policy, a convoluted paragraph was read to me that said, each incident will be paid up to $1500, but they said that only counted during the year prior to the renewal! How many elderly have been victimized by this scam? I am sincerely disappointed with the ASPCA for allowing such practices!
